Is it a “Treat” or is it a “Treatment”

Massage conjures up the image of candles, relaxing music and a therapist ready to pamper someone: a ‘treat’.  But, it is so much more than that!

The term massage means so much too so many. If someone says to you, apple pie, everyone thinks of something a little different. Is there vanilla ice cream on top of your image? Are you thinking about one that has a crust that is solid or criss-crossed? Are you in your own kitchen, your grandmother’s, a friend’s house or at a bakery? The same is true with massage. The term is too generic to define any more.

At Body-Wise Therapeutics, we prefer to use the term: Bodywork. It is  the application of hands on techniques for some type of  improved healing.. Here are some of the types of bodywork:

Swedish Relaxation massage, sports massage, Deep tissue massage, Stone massage, reflexology, Rolfing ~ structural integration, Lymphatic Drainage, prenatal, Aromatherapy Massage, Acupressure Massage, body talk, Bowen Technique, Hellerwork, Lomi Lomi, Oriental massage therapy, Orthopedic Massage, Polarity work, reflexology, Trager work and others.

Curious as to what some of the benefits of receiving body-work are? That would depend on the type of bodywork . Here are just a few of the benefits offered:

o    Decreases pain and improves range of motion

o    Increases joint flexibility

o    Reduces spasms or cramps

o    Relaxes and softens injured, tired and overused muscles

o    Stretches tight or atrophied muscles

o    Helps ‘athletes’ of all kinds prepare for and recover from workouts

o    Reduces post-surgery adhesions and swelling

o    Promotes tissue regeneration

o    Pumps nutrients into tissues and vital organs

o    Lessens stress, anxiety and depression

o    Relieves headaches and migraine pain

o    Stimulates lymph flow- the body’s natural defense system

So, with benefits like these, one has to ask themselves is getting bodywork a Treat or a Treatment for self-care ?
